Create Your Own Jewelry

Creating jewelry can be a fun hobby with tangible results.  There are many different types of jewelry to make such as beading, metal casting, art clay molding, and chain mail.  You can make unique items for yourself as well as gifts for others.  Creating a beaded necklace or a silver ring for a loved one makes for a sentimental and personal gift.

The easiest type of jewelry making would be in the form of beading.  You would basically purchase beads, findings, and filament thread and put them together in various patterns and create a unique piece.  You could use wire instead of thread and with the help of jewelry pliers, twist your way into wirework.

Art clay is a newer form of jewelry making that originated in Japan as a way to create sterling silver jewelry without the many years of jewelry making studies.  Silver or gold is incorporated into clay so that you would basically sculpt your jewelry item, then fired or heated so that the clay burns away leaving the metal intact.  In this way, it would be similar to molding a clay item into becoming a stunning metallic item.

Metal casting is much more difficult jewelry making technique involving heating metal, pouring into molds and allowing it to cool to create different items.  A kiln would be the most probably heat source and then after creating your design, probably out of clay, you would make a mold of it so that you could pour the melted metal into the mold.  This is a much more original type of jewelry making as you can create your original design for molding and also the metal itself is one of your own making.  You would have to understand the nature of each type of metal to be able to know how to handle the metal mix.

Chain mail is created by way of interlocking metal rings into a pattern to create a woven type of covering.  Historically, it was used as armor as it was a form of textile that deflected the edges of weapons.  In modern times, it is used in accessories or jewelry, as well as period costuming for theatre or dress up.  Chain mail uses pliers and metal wiring with the process being to take the metal wire, cut a piece off, form into a circle.  Do this again with another piece of wire and then link the two rings together.
