The Purpose of Bracelets and Necklaces

Identity is a major part of the human experience.  A person's identity is influenced by their individual culture, religious beliefs, and political views.  However, identity can also be influenced by a person's vital characteristics such as height, weight, hair color, eye color, the presence of facial hair, and hairstyle.  Modern people are made aware of this fact daily, because most modern countries issue identification cards, which contain a color photograph of the individual, and a list and description of their vital characteristics.  These identification cards have been improved by many states’ efforts to include a person's allergies, medical conditions, and familial contact information printed on the card, or in the identity card’s magnetic strips, which can be scanned through a computer card reader.  However, our ancestors used jewelry to identify themselves to others.  One of the most common methods found in Western Europe was the use of the signet ring.  A signet ring was a large ring, which bore the symbol of a person’s family, and was most common among the ranks of the nobility.  These symbols could range from natural features such as a mountain, tree, or rock formation to the visage of predatory animals such as lions, raptors, bears, boars, or wolves.  These rings identify the wearer as a member of the noble families during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  However, sterling silver rings, particularly amulets, which bore the same symbol as the ring, were also employed for identification purposes.  Furthermore, silver bracelets also fulfilled these purposes.  However, the use of bracelets for an indication was more common in Asian countries such as India, China, Korea, in the Empire of Japan.

In modern times silver bracelets and silver necklaces, as well as jewelry made from other materials, are widely used for the purposes of identification.  This is particularly true of military and medical personnel, as well as physically and mentally disabled people, who have no reason to carry the most common type of identification, a driver’s license, due to either their inability to drive a motor vehicle, or the hazardous situations that confront them on a daily basis such as heavy combat.  These bracelets and necklaces can be made a variety of material including brass, steel, tungsten, and tin.  However, the majority of people who wear these bracelets and necklaces choose to purchase well-made silver necklaces or silver bracelets, because of their value and the fact that they are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  Beauty and utility have been melded together in the creation of necklaces, bracelets, and other types of jewelry.
